When organisations need to hire SAP consultants, or specialists in Salesforce, Oracle, ServiceNow or Microsoft platforms, the word “consultant” hides a lot of variety. An SAP finance functional consultant and an SAP integration developer share a vendor and little else. The same applies to a Salesforce administrator and a Salesforce technical architect. Hiring goes well when the brief is precise about which one you need.

This guide is for HR, talent acquisition and technology leaders hiring enterprise platform specialists, whether for a new implementation, a migration or ongoing support.

What makes enterprise platform hiring different

Enterprise platforms sit at the centre of finance, HR, supply chain, customer service and IT operations. A weak hire does not just slow a project; it can leave configuration and data problems that last for years. Several features make these roles distinct:

  • Expertise is organised by module or cloud, not only by platform. SAP FI/CO, SD, MM and SuccessFactors are separate skill sets. Salesforce Sales Cloud, Service Cloud and Marketing Cloud differ too.
  • Version matters. Experience on older releases does not always transfer to current ones, such as a move to SAP S/4HANA.
  • Project type matters. Someone who has only supported a stable system may struggle to lead a new implementation, and the reverse is also true.
  • Functional and technical skills are different jobs. Functional consultants configure business processes; developers and architects build integrations, extensions and custom code.

Write a brief that lets you hire SAP consultants who fit

A precise brief is the best filter you have. Include:

  • The platform, module and version, for example SAP S/4HANA Finance, Salesforce Service Cloud or ServiceNow IT Service Management
  • Whether the role is functional, technical or architectural
  • The project context: new implementation, migration, rollout to new entities or ongoing support
  • Your delivery model, including whether a systems integrator is involved and who the person will work with
  • Industry context, since process knowledge in banking, government, retail or energy is often as valuable as platform knowledge
  • Whether the role is permanent or tied to a programme timeline

Our article on writing a technology job description goes into more detail on separating essential from desirable requirements.

Common enterprise platform roles

SAP

Functional consultants by module, technical consultants and ABAP developers, Basis and platform specialists, integration specialists, and solution architects who design the landscape. Programme and delivery leads are often needed for large implementations.

Salesforce

Administrators, developers, consultants for specific clouds, and technical or solution architects. For complex implementations, a technical architect who understands integration with core systems is often the critical hire.

Oracle

Oracle Fusion and E-Business Suite functional consultants for finance, HR and supply chain, technical developers, and database specialists. Be explicit about which product family you run.

ServiceNow

Developers, administrators and platform architects, often specialising in IT service management, IT operations management, HR service delivery or security operations.

Microsoft

Dynamics 365 functional and technical consultants and Power Platform developers, with overlap into Azure for integration and data.

Screening enterprise platform CVs

These CVs are full of acronyms, and keyword matching alone will surface many candidates who look similar. What separates them is delivery history. When you hire SAP consultants, or any platform specialist, look for:

  • The number and type of projects, and the candidate’s role in each
  • Full life-cycle implementation experience, if that is what you need
  • Modules and versions that match yours
  • Industry and process knowledge relevant to your organisation
  • Certifications, as supporting evidence rather than a substitute for project history

At Masarat.ai, AI-assisted screening rates each CV against the job description on experience, skills, achievements, progression, domain and application. Each is scored from one to five against a clear bar and combined into a weighted score, with strengths, gaps and points to validate stated explicitly. A recruiter reviews every shortlist before it goes to the employer. For platform roles, the domain and application ratings do much of the work, because they capture whether a candidate’s experience matches your module, version and project type.

Assessing platform specialists

Interviews should test what the person will actually do. Ask a functional consultant to walk through how they would configure a process you run, or how they handled a difficult requirement on a past project. Ask an architect to sketch an integration between the platform and one of your core systems. Ask a developer about extensions they built and how they kept them maintainable through upgrades.

Use a qualified technical evaluator, especially for architect and developer roles. If your internal team is new to the platform, an experienced evaluator matters even more.

Contract, permanent or pipeline

Many organisations bring in consultants through integrators for implementation and then hire permanent staff for support. That handover is where knowledge often gets lost. If you know you will need internal platform capability after go-live, start building a pool early. Our article on the technology talent pipeline explains how, and our engagement models cover single roles, pipelines and ongoing partnerships.

Before any offer, confirm the basics on the verification checklist: current employment, work authorisation, degrees and certifications, and salary expectations and availability. Notice periods for senior consultants can be long, so check them before you commit to a project start date.

Frequently asked questions

Should we hire SAP consultants on contract or permanently?

It depends on the phase. Implementation work is often project-based, while support, enhancements and ownership of the platform after go-live usually suit permanent roles. Many organisations use both.

How important are platform certifications?

They show a baseline of knowledge and are sometimes required by partners or clients. Project history, module fit and the candidate’s role on past implementations usually tell you more.
